Project:"Plateau" effects

Overview

Plateau

Post-processing for a student film that I did as a short project before leaving school. I did a matte painting covering a lighting mistake, and a more complex composition to fake a gasoline meter. The film "Plateau" was one of the thesis work films done at Lahti by our final-year film students.

There were two problems to correct, both of which the director and crew noticed only when they started editing. In one scene, a dimming film attached to a window was giving off an unwanted reflection that was noticeable enough to distract some viewers. Since the camera movement was simple, I painted a small matte patch to hide the reflection and motion-matched it to the scene.

The other scene was more difficult. The protagonist walks to a gasoline pump and starts taking gasoline into a can, but the static meter displays are clearly visible, since the actor is not really pumping gas. Covering the displays somehow was one option, but I opted to construct a fully functioning meter display that would work in accordance with the actor's actions. The scene takes place in heavy snowfall and has three-dimensional camera movement, so the motion tracking was tricky, not to mention getting the meter to look convincing with snowfall, reflections and functioning displays.

This was very interesting since I haven't worked with video effects much. It was exciting to see the results turn out well, when I really had very little experience when starting out. Most time was spent on the motion tracking, which turned out difficult. I would definitely like to do more video- and film-related work, like titles and special effects.
